Having studied Radiation Oncology,
Dr. Blauth has been trained
to treat patients suffering from cancer by utilizing various forms of radiation therapy in an attempt at preventing cancer cells from continuing to divide. Dr. Blauth is trained to identify the type of cancer and create a requisite treatment plan that will increase the patient's chances at overcoming the disease.
Radiation oncology is a highly specialized field of medicine that encompasses the treatment and management of patients suffering from a wide range of cancers and diseases. Radiation oncologists work to improve the quality of life for these patients, and often work as part of a multidisciplinary medical team that includes other physicians, therapists, nurses, social workers and care partners, among others.
After a patient has been diagnosed with cancer, their physician or team of physicians will construct a personalized plan to treat and manage the disease. Often times, this will include radiation therapy performed by radiation oncologists. Radiation therapy can be used as a sole treatment, or in conjunction with other treatment procedures (such as chemotherapy).
When radiation therapy is deemed necessary, as is common in many treatment plans for various types and forms of cancer, radiation oncologists introduce radiation waves into the patient’s body. The radiation works to destroy cancerous cells, or keep to them from multiplying – in the process, shrinking tumors or preventing the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. In an attempt at protecting the healthy, normal cells of the body, radiation oncologists carefully plan the amount of radiation used. Other preventative measures include shielding as much of the body as possible from the radiation, as well as spreading treatments out over time so as to give the body time ample to recover from what can be a draining, tiresome process for the patient.
